History

The Origin: Where Science Meets Art
Nobel Prize laureate Professor T. D. Lee once emphasized that regardless of form, both art and science are manifestations of human creativity.
“Art and science are two sides of the same coin.” — T. D. Lee
This belief has not remained an abstract idea — it has been repeated, tested, and practiced over decades:
-
1987–1998 Artists created 20 original posters for 21 international physics conferences, presenting scientific themes through artistic expression.
-
June 1993 The first Science and Art Symposium was co-organized by the China Center of Advanced Science and Technology and the Yanhuang Art Museum, initiated by T. D. Lee and artist Huang Zhou.
-
June 2001 T. D. Lee and Wu Guanzhong organized the International Art and Science Exhibition and Academic Symposium at the National Art Museum of China.
-
2013 T. D. Lee funded the establishment of the T. D. Lee Science and Art Lecture Fund at Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
Inspired by Lee’s philosophy, many prominent scientists in China began asking:
Can we build a place where scientists and artists from around the world may think, create, and converse freely in nature?
A Decade in the Making: The Birth of the Dali T. D. Lee Center for Science and Art
On this land where nature, culture, and history meet, the Dali T. D. Lee Center for Science and Art (DTLCSA) was born.
On the morning of July 6, 2025, the center was officially inaugurated at the Taiping Home · Dali International Wellness Community — marking the completion of a long journey from concept to academic trial to physical realization.
Leaders from academia, industry, and local government attended the ceremony, witnessing the establishment of a visionary institution built for global scientific and artistic exchange.
